How Long Does Custom Silk Production Take? A Realistic Timeline
Quick answer: Custom silk scarves take about 5 to 7 weeks from approved artwork to your door: 4 to 5 weeks of production, then 5 to 8 business days for delivery by DHL Express. A finished sample is optional and takes 4 to 5 weeks, so allow 11 to 13 weeks in total if you want to approve a sample first. The Custom Studio shows an estimated delivery window for your order before you buy.
Every custom silk project has a date attached to it. An exhibition opening. A graduation. A wedding. A conference where the gifts need to be in the room. The most common planning mistake is not starting too late. It is not knowing what the timeline involves until the pressure is already on.
Custom silk production is not slow, but it has a sequence, and each stage depends on the one before it. Here is how long each stage takes and how to plan around it.
What are the stages of a custom silk scarf order?
An order moves through three stages, or four if you choose a finished sample.
Stage one: artwork review (1 to 5 working days)
In the Custom Studio you choose your size, silk, finish and quantity, upload a preview of your artwork and share the full-resolution file. Our production team reviews every artwork for print-readiness, covering resolution, file format and color mode, and tells you if anything needs attention before production begins. Read our guide on how to prepare your artwork file before you upload.
If your artwork is ready to print, this stage takes a day or two. If it needs adjusting, allow a few extra days. This is the stage where getting things right costs almost nothing.
Stage two, optional: finished sample (4 to 5 weeks)
A finished sample is one complete scarf, printed on your chosen silk and hemmed in your chosen finish. It shows you the color, scale and feel before the full order is made. We print two and send you the better one; the other is kept as the color reference for your production run.
A sample is optional. We recommend it when a color has to match a brand or a dress, when the order is large, or when you simply want to hold the scarf before committing. If you request Pantone color matching, allow extra time for color variations to be printed and approved.
Stage three: production (4 to 5 weeks)
Production begins once your artwork and production details are approved. The silk is printed on both sides, steamed to fix the dye permanently into the fiber, washed, dried and inspected. Each scarf is then cut and hemmed individually. A hand-rolled hem is slower to make than a machine hem because every edge is rolled and stitched by hand. Read our guide to hand-rolled vs machine hems to choose between them.
Every piece is checked for color consistency, hem quality, cutting accuracy and print alignment before it is packed.
Stage four: delivery (5 to 8 business days)
Your scarves are shipped by DHL Express, tracked, with duties paid. Delivery usually takes 5 to 8 business days and varies with your location.
How long does the full process take from start to finish?
| Your order | Allow |
|---|---|
| Straight to production, no sample | About 5 to 7 weeks to your door |
| Finished sample first, then production | About 11 to 13 weeks to your door |
| Repeat order of an approved design | About 5 to 7 weeks to your door |
Timing starts once your artwork and production details are approved, not on the day you order.
When should I order for a fixed date?
Work backwards from the day the scarves need to be in your hands, and add a week of breathing room.
| Occasion | Order by, no sample | Order by, with a sample |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday gifts, needed by mid-December | Mid-October | Early September |
| Graduation and commencement gifts, needed by late May | Late March | Mid-February |
| Year-end client gifts, needed by early December | Early October | Late August |
| An exhibition opening or wedding | 8 weeks before | 14 weeks before |
If you are planning a museum or gallery range, our guide to custom silk scarves for museum and gallery gift shops has more on timing around exhibitions.
What causes delays?
- Artwork that is not ready to print. This is the most common cause. Low resolution and the wrong color mode are the usual culprits.
- A second sample. Most projects with well-prepared artwork need only one.
- Color matching. Printing and approving color variations adds time before production.
- Busy periods. The weeks before the holidays fill early, and late January and February are our slowest weeks of the year. Allow extra time for orders that fall across either.
Are repeat orders faster?
A repeat order of an approved design goes straight to production, with no artwork changes and no sample, so allow about 5 to 7 weeks to your door.
What if my deadline is tight?
Email support@lovesilk.com before you order and tell us the date. A faster turnaround is sometimes possible, and we would rather say plainly what is achievable than let you plan around a date we cannot meet.
